Managing Officer, DENSO Corporation


Mitsuo Matsushita, director of DENSO Corporation’s Board of Directors with more than 30 years experience in automotive and international business, was appointed president and chief operating officer of DENSO International America, Inc. (DIAM), Southfield, Mich., effective July 1, 2002.

In his role as president and COO, he manages DIAM, mainly focusing on customer relationships with US-based car manufacturers at DENSO International America, the North American headquarters for Japan-based DENSO Corporation.

Prior to this assignment, Matsushita served as executive vice president of DENSO Europe B.V., DENSO’s European headquarters in Weesp, The Netherlands from January 2000 through June 2002. He helped lead the expansion of its European business at a time when DENSO Manufacturing S.P.A. and DENSO Thermal Systems S.P.A. were acquired in 2001. During his tenure as executive vice president at DENSO Europe, the sales sharply increased from US$1.29 billion to an expected US$1.8 billion in 2002. In 2001, he was appointed concurrently as a member of DENSO Corporation’s Board of Directors.

Matsushita, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics in March 1971 from Kanazawa University in Ishikawa prefecture, joined Nippondenso Co., Ltd. (now DENSO Corporation) in the same year.

At DENSO, he started his career as an overseas project planner covering launch of new operations in Southeast Asian countries. Later, during the period of 1975 till 1987, he was in charge of DENSO’s domestic OEM sales with Honda and Subaru in Tokyo.

With his domestic sales and marketing experience, Matsushita was transferred to DENSO International America in Detroit, Mich. in 1988 to broaden his sales and marketing horizons in the American automotive industry.

In 1996, Matsushita was assigned as general manager of DENSO Corporation’s Engine Control Components Planning Department in Kariya, Aichi prefecture, Japan, where he promoted new development of business with his sales and marketing background.

Matsushita and his wife, Yoko, have three children. In his spare time, he enjoys bicycling, golf and international travel.
